Detroit Lakes Police Department K-9 Program

In July of 2003, our former K-9
"Quincy" passed away and left a major gap not only in our ranks but
in our resources. It was quickly decided to continue the program
into the new year. The support from the public was outstanding and
nearly twice as much of the needed funds were raised to help pay the
costs for getting a new K-9 unit off the ground.
In 2004, Officer Robert Strand was teamed
with K-9 "Chase" and began patrol of our streets just before the summer
tourist season. They were involved in a variety of critical situations
that were very helpful to law enforcement and other public safety
agencies around the region over the last two years.
In may of 2006, K-9 Chase passed away due to unknown medical reasons. He was only 4 years old. A
Chase Memorial that contains part of the original newspaper report
can be found on our new memorial section by

NEW K-9 PROGRAM FOR
DECEMBER 2006
Officer Robert Strand attended a special
school down in North Carolina in the late fall of 2006 to get paired
with another dog. "Macho" is a three year old German Sheperd imported
from England and was purchased from Ocard Knoll Kennel in Angier, NC.
The school Strand attended was two weeks long. Strand trained with Macho
and observed many of the things he has already been trained to do. Macho
has extensive training from overseas and has been raised for sport. The
sport done overseas is almost identical to what K-9 Police dogs do.
Macho is currently certified to work the street for patrol and narcotics
duty. His commands are all in Dutch.
Here are some of the latest photos of
Macho taken 12/20/2006:
