Hiring Information and Procedures for 2010

Information on our next testing dates will be posted here as they become available. At the present time, there are no current or new positions open for the planned 2010-2011 budget year.

The Detroit Lakes Police Department offers a starting annual income competitive with surrounding agencies and similar-sized communities. Rates of pay increase in various pay grades. For example, a new hire without any experience would reach top-patrol officer status after three years with union-negotiated percentage increases each year.

Officers also receive a Uniform Allowance with most duty gear paid for by the Department, various Health Insurance options, shift differential and years of service bonuses, flex plans, overtime opportunities, union protection, legal defense options, healthcare retirement savings, plus Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) and other benefits.

Officers can enjoy the atmosphere of working in a small town environment that offers some of the same excitement and types of calls as larger agencies due to our tourist economy and higher caseload of work. The surrounding area is home to numerous lakes, parks, and forests with plenty of outdoor activities year-round.

Applicants must be Minnesota POST Licensed or Eligible to be Licensed with a minimum 2-year College Degree and no Felony convictions or other serious offenses plus a good driving record.

For a complete list of qualifying and disqualifying factors visit the Minnesota POST board homepage listed below.
